Next week Tuesday, Education Minister Patrick Faber is expected to take the
proposal for the “Teaching Services Commission” to Cabinet for approval.
But today the Teachers’ Union sent him a letter asking him to hold up
and stop. Guess what? He won’t. That’s about the size of it, but
let us fill you in on the details.
Though Faber met with the BNTU and the Catholic Bishop’s Commission
at length last week – now the teachers want him to take it to the “Joint
Education Act and Rules Working Committee,” The teachers are also
asking to discuss the latest proposals and ideas for school discipline,”
including corporal punishment which covers lashing in schools. The teachers
release says “the process....must not be rushed...at least not before
the end of 2009.”
Well, we reached Minister Faber this evening and he told us that he has seen
the letter from the BNTU but he is still going ahead to take it to Cabinet.
He says there has been a year of consultations and that consultation cannot
go on forever. He added that at meetings last week all parties, meaning the
church and the union understood that they plan to take the plan forward.
He stressed that after he take sit to Cabinet, and to the House there will
still be room for consultation. He says it should go to the house for a first
reading in November.
