More than one hundred junior athletes represented Belize in last month’s
Central American Council for Sports and Recreation Games in Costa Rica. None
of them returned home with medals but today the volleyball team from St. Catherine’s
Academy and the male basketball team from Sadie Vernon High School received
trophies from the Ministry of Sports.
And that’s fair because the volleyball team won 3 out of their
6 games and the male basketball team won two out of their six games and knocked
host team Costa Rica out of the competition. Both teams were honoured at an
award ceremony this afternoon. We spoke to the SCA girls but we begin with 17
year old Kacheif Thomas from the basketball team.
Kachief Thomas, Male Basketball Team
“We played six games and we lost four and win two. It wasn’t
easy games, it was hard games and so my time and I got broke down and I tried
to do the best I can to represent my country and also my team mates and we ended
up losing four games.”
Viviani Avila, SCA Volleyball Team
“We came in fourth, a lot of people think that just because you came
in fourth and you didn’t get a medal you didn’t do good but trust
me that out there you really have to work hard to place so fourth place is a
big improvement.”
Keith Swift,
“How were the games for you?”
Emma Hoare, SCA Volleyball Team
“It was really challenging, fighting against the other countries.”
Ashley Habet, SCA Volleyball Team
“It was good, like we learnt a lot.”
Alicia Habet, SCA Volleyball
“I enjoyed playing because some of the teams are hard and it shows
where your weak spots are so I think it was challenging but if we practiced
a little harder we could have done better.”
Viviani Avila,
“Usually we go out there and we just play and you wouldn’t recognition
towards anything but this is a big difference and it feels good to actually
know that Belize recognizes us for representing the country.”
Emma Hoare,
“Last year we didn’t get recognized at all so this year it does
feel way better.”
Kachief Thomas,
“I feel proud because no one would ever get this opportunity to go
out and represent Belize. Well people get the opportunity but when they do come
back, it is like they forgot about them. So I feel happy to get this trophy
and this certificate.”
Kacheif’s performance is noteworthy because he received offers
for scholarship from all six participating countries.
