But the youths weren’t the only ones recognized today. Belize’s
National Cricket Team returned from Chile with silver medals. They say the competition
was stiff and the loss against Brazil was bitter.
Howell Gillett, National Cricket Team
“Belize did well considering the conditions that we play under and
what we got when we reached there in terms of the weather and the type of turf
you play on; you have to readjust yourself in relation to Belize.”
Mikhal Anthony, National Cricket Team
“It was good but then what happened is we lost to Brazil by the tip
of the iceberg and Brazil is a team that we defeated last year very bad and
it is surprising to see that they came back and beat us.”
Howell Gillett,
“It was in my view, and in most of the other player’s view,
that it was an error in judgement because the game was very close. We could
have won, it was for Belize. The other team had already gave up but it so happens
that Brazil and we won all the games following that game. But we could have
done much better.”
Hon. Elvin Penner, Minister of Sports
“What we decided to do was why don’t we get these four events
together and do one good ceremony and present these individuals with awards
to let them know how much we appreciate the work that they have done and continue
to do.”
Phllippa Griffith Bailey was also recognized this afternoon for induction
into the International Softball Hall of Fame. And Sports Minister Elvin Penner
himself was recognized for winning a fishing competition in Mexico.
