Saturday night was Halloween. It was the first time in six years that
Halloween fell on a Saturday and the luxury of a weekend should have given trick
or treaters an advantage. But there was a spoiler this year – rain and
wet conditions. But that didn’t deter our team of Keith Swift and Codie
Noralez who found out that the rain didn’t dampen the spirit of the night.
[Children Shouting “Trick or treat in Belize City.”]
That was the mood in the city on Saturday night as children both young and
the young at heart defied the rain and hit the streets some with umbrellas and
others with just a witch’s hat on - and all in search of that trick or
treat – and in the scary spirit of the October observance
Kevin Young, Looking for Tricks or Treat
“We come trick or treat right now. Today is devil’s birthday right. I like Halloween because it is fun.”
Keith Swift,
“What unu supposed to be?”
Kevin Young,
“Well we nuh care about that, we just the trick or treat. She is to
be a vet and I fi be a Doctor Evil but I nuh biscuit, we di trick or treat right
now.”
Keith Swift,
“In the rain.”
Kevin Young,
“Inna the rain, we nuh biscuit.”
And that rain didn’t seem to bother anyone. At least it didn’t
for Shamar Tablada and her child.
Shamar Tablada, Looking for Tricks or Treat
“I am the wicked witch of Belize.”
Keith Swift,
“How is it going for you?”
Shamar Tablada,
“Well it’s rainy and ih the throw we off but we still di do
it for the kids. This is my daughter’s first year because she is only
one and eight months.”
And along with the wicked……..there was the weird.
Marquisa, Looking for Trick or Treat
“My name is Marquisa.”
Deneesha, Looking for Trick or Treat
“My name is Deneesha.”
Keith Swift,
“So what unu supposed to be?”
Deneesha,
“We dah two girls for the night.”
Keith Swift,
“Where did you get the clothes from?”
Deneesha,
“From our mom…we just feel like dress up like this. We have
more fun like this, everybody laugh. We want everybody to laugh because you
are supposed to enjoy yourself on Halloween night. We just like it, it is just
like for every year, every 31st, everybody just come out and do it and from
we small we used to do it so we done used to it already so we will just continue
do it.”
Of course a mandatory stop for all trick or treaters is Stanley Lizama’s
home on Second Street. This year he flipped the script but didn’t disappoint.
Stanley Lizama, Fixed up house for Halloween
“I bring out a different style this year. First I used to have a spider
web but this time I put the spider on the fence and I did other thing else.
And I have my lady in the casket this year. Last year it was a man.
I do this mostly for the kids because these days the kids really need something
to come out and enjoy themselves.”
Keith Swift,
“Is there any reason why you like Halloween?”
Stanley Lizama,
“Well I am somebody that deals with the dead. If anybody don’t
know about me, I am one that dresses the dead also. That is part of my job and
I like things like this.”
