And while the scouts are cleaning up the environment, the students
of Hummingbird Elementary and St. John’s Vianney were cleaning up with
medals and trophies today. The occasion was the Belize District volleyball finals
and teams competed in both male and female disciplines. In the end Hummingbird
Elementary won the girls Belize District championship while St. John Vianney
won the boys competition. And while only one team went home with the first place
trophy just looking inside the City Center and you’d see that with sports,
everybody wins. Sports Director Anthony Michael told us more.
Anthony Michael, Director – National Sports Council
“A lot of people have come out today to support. Like I was telling
you earlier Jules is the level that we as a government and as a people need
to start invest in. When you look at the support from their team mates, their
class, their parents and in some cases the community at large because for instance
we had Hattieville and those other people that came in and we have support from
different people out there that assist in the transportation and food and stuff
for these kids and for that as a government and as a nation we are grateful.
Belize City has the highest crime rate and when you are seeing young kids,
13, 14 years of age pulling a gun and being taken to court because of robbery
and murder, and when you look on the positive side of the coin and you see where
13 and 14 year old, both male and female, coming to school, participating in
sports, you did not have one incident of violence out here.”
Hummingbird Elementary was second in the boys competition while Burrell
Boom Methodist was second for girls.
