Last week Friday we showed you the contestants for Ms. Garifuna Belize
City. Well that was like the playoffs, and tomorrow, the winner of similar pageants
held countrywide are going into the final for the National Miss Garifuna Pageant.
Who will be crowned the new queen? Well there are six young women vying for
the title. Late this evening we caught up with one of the pageant coordinators
and got a sneak peek at what will be happening tomorrow night.
Fidelis Mejia, Coordinator
“We have six young ladies from the different Garifuna communities.
We have one representing Belize City, Belmopan, Dangriga, Hopkins, Seine Bight
and Georgetown.
The proper dance steps will be judged so they need to know that very good. They needed to learn the items; they have their introduction to present and
then they have their main presentation and also they will be going through an
interview.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“Watching the young ladies on stage, will this be a tight competition
tomorrow?”
Fidelis Mejia,
“Of course. I was watching them earlier and I was like where the dancing
was flowing properly, very good, so the judges will be having a hard time tomorrow.
I could tell you that.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“And what will be required of the winner, what will she need to do in
her year of reign as the Miss National Garifuna Queen?”
Fidelis Mejia,
“She will need to like put herself into the Garifuna culture, like
100% we would say, go around to schools and assist maybe in schools, take part
in workshops and head the workshops so that she could teach songs, dances, and
nursery rhymes in Garifuna. She will need to be very active.”
The National Garifuna Pageant gets underway from seven on Saturday
night it at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets will be on sale
at the booth for twenty dollars.
