Two men were killed on the same stretch of the Northern Highway in
less than 24 hours. The incidents aren’t directly related but the men
are. The first victim is 22 year old Diego Sanchez – a resident of Santa
Clara Village who worked in the Corozal Free Zone. He was knocked down late
on Thursday night just outside of Louisville Village near mile 24 on the Northern
Highway.
He was dragged off road into a canefield after he was hit. He suffered
severe head and back injuries and died. A post mortem certified that he died
from traumatic shock but the family doesn’t believe his death was an accident.
His father in law Filiberto Aban told us this afternoon that he believed Diego
Sanchez was deliberately run over.
Filiberto Aban, Father in Law of Deceased
“I see it like it was intentionally because the way I see the body,
the vehicle that knocked him down, you could see the trace of the tyres that
went inside because he was walking beside the canefield and then it looked like
the vehicle came straight and knocked him down.”
Keith Swift,
“So the vehicle drove into him?”
Filiberto Aban,
“Yes intentionally and that threw him on the roadside. I think when
he was hit, he went up and when he fell down I think he, his head was open. He didn’t die instantly because the guy that took him in the ambulance
he told me, he said your son didn’t instantly, when he was going to the
hospital in the ambulance he died.”
Keith Swift,
“Who would have wanted to kill him?”
Filiberto Aban,
“I think the way how I heard things, it is not something that I am
saying that I am accusing nobody but the only person who could clarify that
is supposed to be the same friend that picked him up from my house because he
used to live with me and I think he supposed to know more or less. He is supposed
to clarify the thing what happened because they were drinking together that
night. They were supposedly drinking in San Narciso Village and from there they
went to San Pedro Village and Cristo Rey. So things happened but I don’t
know, I can’t say nothing because at that time I was at home sleeping
taking care of my family.”
Keith Swift,
“Have you spoken with the friend he was with yet ask him what happened?”
Filiberto Aban,
“You see I left everything to the police because I don’t have
any contact with him. I know him from far, I only his name, they call him Ricky
Pat, and my point is that he is supposed to know something concerning my son
in law.”
Filiberto Aban also told us that Diego Sanchez and Ricky Pat went grocery
shopping in Mexico on Thursday. He says the men were trying to illegally cross
back into Belize territory via a dory but were unsuccessful. Information to
Filiberto Aban is that two then went on a drinking spree in San Narciso Village
and also stopped in San Pedro and Cristo Rey Villages. Police haven’t
indicated if Ricky Pat is considered a suspect.
