Hurricane Ida blew right past Belize, causing no damage at all. There was steady
rain across the country, but water levels were only slightly elevated.
And at this hour, Ida has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm with sustained
winds of 70 miles an hour. The Storm is turning into the United States Gulf
Coast where she is expected to make landfall tonight. After landfall, the storm
is expected to weaken significantly.
And while for Belize Ida was a scare much more than she was a reality in El
Salvador, which wasn’t even hit by the storm, Ida caused massive flooding.
According to international news reports, at least 124 people have been killed
and more than 60 declared missing in flooding and mudslides. Rivers spilled
over their banks and hillsides collapsed under incessant rains.
President Mauricio Funes described the disaster as a “tragedy”
and said the damage was “incalculable.” 7 thousand persons are in
shelters and some areas are still inaccessible. The hardest hit areas are the
capital San Salvador and the San Vicente province in the country’s interior.
