Cabinet met in Belmopan today and, we suspect, considered weighty matters,
but the sanitized press release that we got only lists three items. Two of them
are barely newsworthy and the third, is good news, in lean times.
That news is that government has set aside the not-so-munificent-sum of forty
thousand dollars for the refurbishment of twenty sporting facilities in Belize
City. As any casual observer of recreational sports enthusiast will know, The
City’s ball courts and football fields are in a woeful state of neglect
and disrepair. A week ago it became a hot button issue on the KREM W-U-B morning
show that there was a shortage of serviceable basketball courts in Belize City.
Well, the Cabinet decision is to deal with the matter post-haste. The forty
grand has been set aside for the refurbishment of no less than twenty sporting
facilities in Belize City. The release announces with gravity that “The
project will get underway shortly, starting on the south side of the city.”
