Still recovering from the embarrassment of the salary and tuition fiasco in
Mid October, 7news has confirmed that the University of Belize has given its
Chief Financial Officer Harry Liu Jr. notice of termination.
Liu Jr. was the one held responsible for major multi-million dollar omissions
in the assessment of UB’s financial position. Those omissions –
amounting we are told to as much as $5 million forced the board to consider
wage freezes and tuition increments. It caused an uproar at the national university
and in the end it was all for naught because the University was not broke as
they thought they were so the wage freeze was reversed and the tuition increments
were taken off the table.
And while the university’s financial position was restored, we are told
there are still discrepancies in the accounts amounting to some serious figure
and an external auditor has been brought in to review the position. The termination
– with benefits – we understand was made by the President Santos
Mahung who could not be reached for comment because he is out of the country.
Our reports are that the Human Resource Manager Yuri Monsanto was also terminated.
