The Alliance Bank of Belize has gone though an ownership change and now, it’s re-branding – meaning, taking on a new name. For some time, the bank has been inviting the general public to submit potential new names. Turns out, five people submitted the same name: “Heritage Bank.” So a raffle was held today to pick a single winner from those five. Jacqueline Ifield, was the winner of the grand cash prize of US$1,000 and a week of paid vacation in a Cancun condo. Ifield could not be present as she is home recovering from a recent surgery however her mom Rita Cole did show up to receive her daughter’s big check and other prizes. 7News also spoke with the bank’s Managing Director Stephen Duncan about the name the Heritage Bank of Belize Limited.

Rita Cole, Mother of Winner
“She was telling me, ‘Mommy I hope I win, I hope I win, I need that vacation and thing.’”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“You think you’re going to get anything since you were the one to come and pick up the prize?”

Rita Cole,
“Oh yes she treats me good.”

Jacqueline Godwin,
“What was so attractive about the name and how do you see it representing Alliance Bank and how you guys plan to move forward?”

Stephen Duncan, Manager – Alliance Bank
“Heritage, there is a context within the country that gives you that have feeling of heritage. All our different ethnic groups and particularly we see a sort of revival as it were of the various ethnic groups trying to strengthen their heritage within the country and that is what contributes to the richness of the country. So in a sense while we have a heritage as a country, there are several heritages that make that up, if there is such a thing. So that is one aspect of it.

The second aspect of it is really we want to send a very strong message to the public that this for us is not as though we’re throwing away what we had and starting with a clean slate. No, we are building on what we had. This is our heritage. A lot of work has gone into it, a lot of people have put a lot of work into and we are not discarding that. What we’re doing very wisely, as anybody would do, is we will take those things that we’ve learnt from experience, that has worked for us. So things that have worked we will take forward with us and the things that did not work so well, we will leave.”

According to Stephen Duncan, Jacqueline Ifield gets a seven night stay at a beach front condo that can accommodate up to six people at the Royal Resorts in Cancun. The US$1,000 is spending money. There were four consolation prizes of US$50 each which was given on a prepaid Mastercard. On another important note, Stephen Duncan says the new name Heritage Bank of Belize Limited will not become effective until January first, 2010 to start off the New Year on a clean slate.
