Belize was lucky to be spared from any damages delivered by Hurricane Ida earlier
this month but the same cannot be said for our Central American neighbour El
Salvador. According to the United Nations, 198 people have been reported dead
and 5,759 others are in 64 shelters with as many as 75,000 people affected by
Hurricane Ida. Today in a good will gesture, Belize’s National Emergency
Management Organization handed over one hundred and twenty five boxes of relief
supplies including bottles of water to the Ambassador from the Republic of El
Salvador, His Excellency Julio Milton Parada.
The shipment will leave Belize in trucks and following a twelve to fifteen
hour drive should arrive in Salvador sometime between Friday and Saturday. In
his response to the donation His Excellency Julio Milton Parada thanked the
government and the people of Belize and said that since the passage of the storm
many shelter-less families continue to suffer especially with cool weather prevailing
over the area.
