City Council Holds Economic Summit
posted (December 4, 2009)

When it comes to sound fiscal management – the Belize City Council would be the last place one to turn to for advice. And perhaps that is why today the council hosted an economic summit. Businesses from across the city were summoned to the Princess Hotel to discuss what’s wrong with the economy and what is the way forward. Mayor Zenaida Moya-Flowers told us about the reason for the summit.

Zenaida Moya-Flowers, Belize City Mayor
“The business representatives that are here, the government officials, we are here to try and see what solutions and recommendations can be devised so as how to deal with the recession really and try to move out of it quicker than later. The businesses are facing a lot of difficulties right now. We understand it at the council, we know fully well what they are going through. We know some of them are being forced to reduce operations, whether temporarily or some permanently. We understand because we also deal with the trade licensing and so we know what is happening in that aspect. We understand though that we will get through it, recovery will come.

Whatever strategies, whatever policies are adopted ultimately will affect how long this recession lasts so we as city officials here and the commercial center of the country, we are trying to get some of those ideas and to also share and be a part of the solution and the way forward.”
