The Safe and Sound music contest was recently launched. The top prize
is $3,000 and it is open to any Belizean artist who wants to spread awareness
about HIV and Aids through music. Sebastian Voelker who is from Germany but
now based in Belize told us more.
Sebastian Voelker, Organizer
“You are totally free in writing your song. The only thing we have
to say is that it should be about HIV. That is the only thing we say you have
to do. All the other things, if you reggae, punta rock, hip-hop, it doesn’t
matter. The only thing you have to do is to write it about HIV.
We just hope to use the medium of music to make the people aware of the
disease and to keep the topic in mind. It is very necessary and important to
teach the people and educate the people about HIV and music will spread the
message best so it is the best thing to get out the message and make the people
aware.
You don’t have to worry about the quality also. It is just important
for us to get an impression of the music so it can be recorded in not that good
quality, it doesn’t matter because we will go with the 16 best bands to
a studio and do the song again just to put it on the same quality level. If
you are an amateur, if you are a singer or musician, you don’t have to
have a band. Just go for yourself and send us your song. It is all about the
message.”
The deadline for entries is January 31st of 2010. The winner gets $3,000
in cash. The top 16 entries will be featured on a compilation CD. The competition
will be judged by a panel that includes Pen Cayetano and judges from Germany
and Jamaica. Visit http://www.safeandsoundbelize.de
