On Friday we told you that the sugar cane season in northern Belize would open
today. Well it didn’t. The start day –we are now told – has
been pushed back to Wednesday, December 16th which is in two days time. The
schedule is set for deliveries to start at ten on Wednesday with strict quotas
in place for quantities and types of sugar.
This is the latest start to a season in memory – as it usually kicks
off in November. The delay is largely the product of discord in the industry,
particularly between the BSI and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association.
