Japan Gives Belize $10 million for Solar Energy Project
posted (December 15, 2009)

The Japanese government is helping the Government of Belize with a solar energy project. It’s in the spirit of combating climate change and US$5 million will be spent on a solar electricity generation system which will produce enough energy to sell into the national grid – or at least that’s the idea. Signing on behalf of the Government of Belize was Financial Secretary Joe Waight and he told the Government Press Office more.

Joe Waight, Financial Secretary
“It is a small project, experimental in a sense. Essentially it consists of a bank of panels that will convert radiation from the sun into electricity. The electricity will then be converted and linked to the national grid, the BEL power system. BEL will pay us for what we produce and that money will then go to maintaining the site and also to providing financial resources for other projects of the same type.”

Work on the project is expected to start in mid- 2010 and should be completed by August 2011.
