Belize’s Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington met with his Guatemalan counterpart
Haroldo Rodas at the OAS in Washington yesterday. The meeting was arranged by
OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza. According to an official release,
all parties agreed that the OAS will deploy a technical team to the Adjacency
Zone to evaluate the functioning of Confidence Building Measures, and to make
recommendations on how to improve their effectiveness. It was also agreed in
principle that the parties would establish a high level group with participation
of the OAS - to deal with controversial issues that may arise along the Belize
Guatemala border.
According to the release, the foreign ministers also reiterated their commitment
to advance the process to submit the territorial differendum to the International
Court of Justice for a final resolution after obtaining the approval of the
people of Belize and Guatemala through referenda.
