It may be Christmas for law abiding citizens, but it’s the killing season
for Belize City’s gangs. Gang warfare is raging in the city’s streets
and today it may have even spread to the prison. 21 year old Keon Swasey was
killed at The Belize Central Prison this morning. Unconfirmed Reports are that
it happened around 9:00 this morning when Swasey was stabbed with a prison-made
knife, known as a “bowra.” He was stabbed by another inmate and
unconfirmed reports to 7News are that he was stabbed by another inmate with
the title Espinosa who is from Orange Walk.
Unconfirmed reports are that it could be gang related because Swasey is linked
to the SSG crew which is believed to be at war with George Street. Christopher
Galvez’s killing on Tuesday night is believed to have been a hit against
George Street with whom Galvez had been known to associate. This evening we
contacted Keon Swasey’s mother who told us it came as a shock; she declined
further comment.
Our archives show that Swasey was criminally charged at least twice in 2008
– where he was accused in both cases of aggravated assault with a firearm.
The most recent accusation in our archives came form a shooting that allegedly
occurred exactly one year ago, on December 25, 2008 when he and his brother
allegedly shot at two persons on Reggae Street.
