Jeffries also spoke about grenades in general, revealing that there
was once an opportunity to buy them from the streets but no one paid it enough
attention. His Assistant Commissioner made an earnest plea for assistance with
information about the whereabouts of grenades.
Martin Segura, Assistant Commissioner
“My appeal here because we have seen what small weapons can do, they
talk about weapons of mass destruction, and no disrespect but this is what is
killing our youths. It is of interest, and I will say it to anybody that has
information, we work with information to clean whatever amount of grenades that
are still out there. We are aware they are still out there, notwithstanding
who knows based on our porous borders, what I am saying is that the community
needs to work along with us, especially with these issues that affect lives.”
Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police
“Well before 2009, those grenades were on the streets of Belize City.
Offers were made and people turned down those offers to buy those grenades at
$50 off the streets around 4 years ago. My friend Jules and I spoke about this
many times because people did not see the need but the day came in September
2008 when it happened and this is where we are right now because when you have
the opportunity you don’t seize it. Those grenades could have been off
the streets for $50 each. I was the officer in charge of Eastern Division then
and that’s the end of that story.
So it is not if you have British grenades alone, it is what will come after
the grenades. Is it because of the drugs, money laundering and other things?
We don’t know, we are looking at those things and those are the reasons
why we say conspiracy theories. We have our theories and we see certain patterns
and we are trying to address those. But we’re asking you the media, this
is sensational, the media will have the entire Belizean populace grabbing at,
wanting a piece of this during the 6:30 news this evening and I want you to
get there to sell this to them. But the reality is that might be other things
that we need to look at. There might be some sinister business behind this,
let us come together.”
And while that’s it for news on the grenade – it’s
not the last of it – we gather a comprehensive government position is
being crafted and that is expected to be released tomorrow.
