Suspect Arrested for Dangriga Attack
posted (January 7, 2010)

Dangriga Police are on the lookout for one man following the arrest of his accomplice John Elijio. The two are responsible for the brutal attack and robbery against a seventy six year old businessman. The victim, restaurant owner Martin Holness had just arrived home around ten thirty on Wednesday night when two armed men who are believed to have been waiting for him fired several shots.

The police report is that the elderly man had already driven his Ford Ranger into the yard, exited the vehicle and was closing his gate when he was assaulted. While one of the bullets shattered the pickup truck’s window on the passenger side it did not hit the victim but he nevertheless sustained injuries when one of the men holding a short pistol lashed him with the weapon. Martin Holness fearing for his life gave in to the robbers demand and handed over six hundred dollars. The assailants then ran off.

But Dangriga Police were hot on their trail and it was not long after that they not only had one of the culprits in custody but some of the stolen items including the weapon they believed was used in the robbery. Police say their investigation led them to the residence of John Elijio. When the house was searched they recovered one Glock nine millimetre pistol, one magazine along with eight nine milimeter rounds of ammunition.

John Elijio was promptly taken into custody and charged with robbery, aggravated assault and wounding. But while the accused John Elijio is on his way to Belize Central Prison the other suspect remains at large.
