And we here at 7News and our colleagues behind the zinc fence have
not only committed to keep you informed about what is happening in Haiti but
as we mentioned in our Thursday night newscast, Channel 7 and Krem Radio and
Television have come together to do our part to help raise funds for the people
of Haiti. Today I spoke with the Managing Directors of both media houses about
the “Help Haiti Benefit Concert and Telethon.”
Jules Vasquez, Channel 7
“I think whenever something of this scale happens you want to do something
but you don’t know what to do. As a journalist you know that our first
instinct is get on a plane and go over there but that is not realistic but we
need to do something. They are a nation in our region, it is an incredible nation
historically. This is one of the most important, this was the first liberated
nation in the hemisphere. So I think it is such an important place, it is such
a sad place but we need to do something and we need to do something meaningful.
Mose being the hype man had an idea for a concert, I would have just left it
at call in with your pledges but he had the idea for a concert. I think it is
a good idea, there is a lot of spirit and energy because all the images you
see get people creative juices going.”
Jacqueline Godwin,
“We’re looking for cash donations Mose, how do you plan to bring
in all of this money?”
Mose Hyde, KREM Radio & TV
“I think it is important to emphasize that while it is Channel 7 and
the KREMANDALA organizations coming together, we are more facilitators because
I might be hype and I can’t sing and I can’t dance and I’ll
speak for myself, maybe Jules is capable of these talents and I am not. What
we are doing is creating the vehicle through which those who have those talents
can be a part of supporting our human brothers and sisters in an extremely devastated
situation. A catastrophic situations exists in Haiti presently and I think that
what we want is for people to come and enjoy, to absorb the artists putting
out what they have to offer.
We don’t have deep pocket to just haul out cash, no wad of money
stashed anywhere, but we have the capacity to let people know about it, capacity
to push the event, and we have relationships with the artists and they are very
willing at this time to come onboard and be a part of the show. So we are very
pleased and encouraged by the support that the artists have demonstrated so
far. So people can support either by paying to get into the concert and it will
be a great place to be. It will be covered live and you will be able to see
it and listen to it but also if you are watching or listening at home, we would
want you to be moved by the support and the solidarity of Belizean artists to
say I have a little dollar and call in and make the pledge.”
Already the event has had overwhelming support from artists across
the country but of course if you would like to volunteer your time and be part
of the entertainment contact either Jules Vasquez at Channel 7 or Mose Hyde
at Krem. The concert and telethon which will be broadcast live takes place next
week Saturday, January twenty third at the Bliss Centre for the performing arts.
It gets underway at seven thirty that night and should run for three hours.
All cash donations will be handed over to the Belize Red Cross.
