There was an accident this evening on the Northern Highway. It happened
near mile four and a half at the entrance to the Bella Vista Residential Community
at around 4:30. 72 year old Maria Searle was turning left on to the highway
in her light blue minivan when a motorcycle travelling from Belize City north
on the highway crashed into her. The driver of the motorcycle was taken to the
hospital. A still shaken Searle told us that she didn’t see the cycle
and the cyclist probably didn’t see her because a bus was obstructing
the view.
Maria Searle, Driver
“There was a bus parked there and I was coming out and people leaving
the bus. I did not see the first motorcycle, I only saw the second motorcycle
coming behind and by the time I saw it, it was too late for me to stop and he
ran into me. If I had stopped he would have hit me straight on and then I would
have gotten hurt too.”
Keith Swift,
“Did you see his injury?”
Maria Searle,
“No he got up and the ambulance came and he gone in the ambulance.
The young man said he only got a scratch on his face but I didn’t think
they should lift him up, I thought they should leave him there but he got up.”
Keith Swift,
“Do you think you were in the wrong?”
Maria Searle,
“I don’t think so because the bus stopped and the vehicles were
behind him. I had enough time to come out. I didn’t see the first motorcycle,
I saw the second one. There was another motorcycle coming but I didn’t
see this one and that is why I came out. Fifty years of driving.”
The cyclist we are told is okay. Police are still investigating.
