He has been at the forefront of the fight for the rights of dialysis
patients but tonight Jose Cruz is in a personal fight to save his hand from
amputation. Cruz is a diabetic and the lower portion of his left foot had to
be amputated in December because of circulation problems. Well now he is in
danger of losing his right fingers because of micro-vascular problems. He needs
$15,000 by Monday in order to undergo surgery in Guatemala. Today he made an
appeal for help.
Jose Cruz, Dialysis Patient
“It is the small veins in the nerve ends that are clogging up. If
you notice the fingernails have dropped off already and the colour of the tips
are changing colour, it is getting dark blue which means that that is dead skin
there. So I am going to have a doctor today remove that skin but that does not
necessarily say the problem will stop there. The problem is within my blood
stream. It is very painful Keith. As you see I am shaking here right now. It
is very painful. I can’t, I just got to keep politely stroking it, wetting
it with water or whatever to get the pain off but it is only a temporary relief
and then it goes right back to the pain again.
I need $15,000 by Monday because I could lose my whole hand. I am basically
appealing to the national and international communities if anybody hears me
out there and is willing to help Mr. Cruz, my bank account number is 11536 at
the Belize Bank Cayo Branch and my number is 627-6057 or 665-9998. I have been
a fighter for the past three and a half years for people and I just think I
wish they would step up for me today.”
The bank account at the Belize Bank in Cayo is again 11536 and Jose
Cruz can be contacted at 627-6057 or 665-9998.
