The accident happened six months ago, but today forty two year old building
contractor Carlos Romero was charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing
death by careless conduct and driving without due care and attention. The three
charges are the result of a fatal road traffic accident that killed sixty two
year old Roy Alton Menzies. No plea was taken from Carlos Romero because the
offences are indictable. He was offered bail of five thousand dollars which
he met and the case has been adjourned until March third.
Sometime after seven on the night of July twenty ninth, 2009 Roy Menzies was
crossing the Northern Highway by the Divine Mercy Church between miles two and
three when he was knocked down by a Toyota Hilux pickup truck driven at the
time by Carlos Romero. Menzies received head and body injuries and died on the
spot.
At the time of the accident, the Menzies family says their loved one was carrying
food home and that he was walking on the side of the highway when he was struck.
There were also reports that at the time Roy Menzies was hit he was seen staggering
along the highway.
Court reports are that Carlos Romero who was represented today by his attorney
Dickie Bradley was reportedly travelling from Belama to Belize City when the
accident occurred.
