Who killed Chris Galvez? Over a month after the 23 year old Belize City Resident
was executed at a boatyard on Faber’s Road, police still don’t have
an answer. But his family says they do. They have presented a witness to police,
a friend of the deceased who says he was at the boatyard when the murder occurred and saw everything. He was there he claims because Chris Galvez asked him to come because he felt unsafe.
And he claims he saw when a police-man shot Galvez. That’s what he’s
sworn to in a statement which ahs been given to police and the DPP. The only
problem is there are two statements. In the first, he says it’s a Honduran
dread who pulled the trigger; in the second he says it was a police man. And he says he was reluctant to tell the truth at first because the first statement
was to police and he feared what would happen to him if he implicated a police
officer. But the second statement was given to the family attorney Hubert Elrington.
It makes a very serious allegation, but is it credible enough to base a murder
trial on? That’s a question that only the DPP can decide and it seems
for the time being, she is taking a wait and see position. She told us that
she cannot give a directive to charge for murder at this time because, quote,
“has certain concerns about what is in the statement and she will ask
police to verify and clarify some of the key details”, close quote, before
she can act on the statement.”
She explained that because the charge would result in a murder trial, her office
has to be able to verify and defend the statement from all challenges. And among
those challenges would be the fact that there are two different statements and
also the fact that a number of other people were in the boatyard and gave a
different version of events.
The bottom line? At this time, no directive to charge a policeman or any other
person for murder has been issued from the DPP’s office.
