For years, environmentalists have asked the questioned – what if the
Chalillo Dam breaks? Well on Thursday they’ll get somewhat of a partial
answer because there will be a flood simulation exercise in San Ignacio and
Santa Elena. The National Emergency Management Organization along with Belize
Electric Company Limited and the Cayo District Emergency Committee will test
the preparedness of schools, families, but more importantly the early warning
sirens and evacuation system that have been the subject of contention between
BECOL and environmentalists in the area. The simulation starts at 7 am on Thursday.
