33 year old Lok Bandhu Karki is riding around the world. But the math
and sociology teacher from Nepal isn’t touring the world to break a record,
he says is simply riding around the world on his mountain bike to promote world
peace. He left Nepal on December 7th 2004 and has visited 76 countries. But
his target is 113 countries by 2013 so he is just passing through Belize. Karki
stopped by our studios to tell us about his world tour.
Lok Bandhu Karki, Riding for Peace
“Everybody has clearly understood that peace is the greatest thing
in the world. For there to be good there must be peace. So if it can plant the
seed of peace in the people and the governments of this earth as well as all
living things there will be peace, freedom, and meaningful life. So that is
why I am doing a small practice to plant the seeds of peace.
In the beginning I used my own money, nearly US$9,000. That money covered
me for one year and when that money finished I got help from Nepalese people,
Indian people, and other social organizations like Red Cross and UN and municipalities
in all countries.
I always travel by bicycle but if sometimes there is a gap, a huge mass
of water, sometimes I take flight.”
Karki plans to stay in Belize for about two weeks after which he will
head to Honduras. Karki says he has travelled 99,935 kilometres – that’s
about 62,000 miles and has gone through five mountain bikes.
