So to do a tally of the staggering spike in violence. In the 124 hours since
Thursday afternoon – 13 people have been shot in Belize City – 3
of them fatally and the life of a fourth hangs precariously in the balance.
As we’ve documented 12 of these shootings happened in two very small
geographic areas – 6 in the Euphrates Avenue-Orange Street-West Street
triangle which is three blocks across and 6 on a less than one mile stretch
on Faber’s Road.
It is believed that 7 of the shootings are the product of direct gang rivalries
– while 6 including the four shot in one go at the corner of Central American
Boulevard and Faber’s Road are the product of random violence but not
necessarily a direct gang rivalry. The killing of businessman Glenston Martinez
is not believed to be gang related. In an update to that story, we note that
a 15 year old has been detained for questioning.
