It’s been more than a month since Christopher Galvez was gunned
down and as you’ve been hearing since his December 22nd murder –
his family is outraged that no arrest has been made. That is mainly because
they say they know who killed Chris and they say - so do the police because
the killer was a policeman. It is a serious allegation – made more so
by the fact the supposed eyewitness who was with Chris on the night he was killed
– first told police another story and implicated another killer. The witness
has been in hiding since the murder but slipped into Belize City today and spoke
to 7News. We distorted his face to conceal his identity but he says there’s
no changing his story.
Keith Swift,
“Who shot Chris Galvez?”
Eyewitness,
“Well I don’t want to use names but it has to do with police.”
Keith Swift,
“A policeman was involved in the murder?”
Eyewitness,
“Yes.”
Keith Swift,
“This is not the story you told police on the night of the murder. You told them a different story, why should we believe you now?”
Eyewitness,
“Because the reason I gave police a crap story is that you as a individual
needs to secure yourself and secure your people and one of the reasons I gave
police that story is that you can’t even trust the police now so giving
them a crap story to throw them off was….everything was quite alright
and I came up with the real story to tell the DPP.”
Keith Swift,
“But you understand why its hard for her to believe in that you told a
different story first and now you change it.”
Eyewitness,
“I did and like I said it was to secure me and my family. At the end
of the day, like I tell you, you have to watch over yourself – nobody
will do it for you. First of all we don’t have witness security for Belize
so by you getting up there thinking you are brave, you won’t make it.”
Keith Swift,
“You’re living in hiding, why is that?”
Eyewitness,
“I am fearing from my life.”
Keith Swift,
“Have you been threatened?”
Eyewitness,
“I have.”
Keith Swift,
“Are you in hiding from the police?”
Eyewitness,
“No.”
Keith Swift,
“Certain police officers?”
Eyewitness,
“Yes it has to do with certain police officers and it has to do with
the streets, people in the streets.”
Keith Swift,
“You believe someone wants to harm you?”
Eyewitness,
“Of course, anyone would want to harm an IC witness.”
The eyewitness’ statement is on the desk of the DPP. She told
us that she cannot give a directive to charge for murder at this time because
she has certain concerns about what is in the statement and she will ask police
to verify and clarify some of the key details. She explained that because the
charge would result in a murder trial, her office has to be able to verify and
defend the statement from all challenges. And among those challenges would be
the fact that there are two different statements from this witness and also
the fact that a number of other people were in the boatyard and gave a different
version of events. DPP Cheryl Lynn Vidal is on maternity leave.
The Galvez family says that when they checked this morning, no decision
had been made on charges. But the Galvez family isn’t letting up.
