Last night, we told that seven year old Janay Moguel underwent an MRI
and spinal tap today her neuro and spine surgeon Dr. Joel Cervantes gave us
an update on the young patients condition. Dr. Cervantes says while young Janay
has since been transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the general ward
at Belize Healthcare Partners Limited but from all the medical examinations
conducted it will now take a miracle for her to walk again even though they
have now detected small movements in the left arm. But she is still unable to
move both legs. Today Janay underwent a minor surgery to remove a blood clot
that was detected on her spine. She will need advanced therapy care that cannot
be fully administered in Belize.
Dr. Joel Cervantes, Neurosurgeon
“She is having some feeling in the left arm which was not being registered
there before, she has a little bit of pain and some abnormal sensation but in
both legs we haven’t been able to register anything as yet and it is important
for the physical therapist to work with her closely because in kids they at times can surprise that she will be able to recover.
In Belize, the therapists that we have, do great jobs but none of them
really is trained specifically to deal with one specific area, they have to
do it in a general sense, so maybe they can do at least 75% of what can be done
out there, the other apparatus they have out there we don’t have in Belize
so if there is a chance for her to get that 25% rehabilitation that we don’t
have in Belize I think she should go for it.
I think it is a high reality that she can remain paralyzed basically from
the level of armpits down and I am also trying to see if she also has an injury
to the nerves that you come out of the neck, they form a cobweb of nerves here,
I have a suspicion of an injury there which would explain the lack of movement
perhaps in the left arm and that would have to be addressed accordingly. But
there is a high possibility, a very high possibility that Janay might not walk
again. Medical science will continue to provide whatever it can, the majority
of these cases, most of the kids they never regain the movement so if she were
to regain movement in the left arm and both legs, it would be because of a lot
of prayers I presume and something that goes beyond what medical science can
offer.”
Janay Moguel will continue to require daily therapy and her parents
as well are also being trained to deliver this level of care to their daughter.
