Tonight police say they have no suspect, no motive, and no leads in
a brutal murder of a Nigerian security guard early this morning. Kalaru Oloungududu
was on duty at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel when he was attacked by three men who
stabbed him to death with a kitchen knife. Witnesses say they heard the security
guard howling for help.
Keith Swift Reporting,
This morning a crowd of Nigerians gathered in front of the security booth at
the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel. Their countryman Kaluru Oloungududu, had been
stabbed to death in front of the booth while on duty at 2:33 this morning. A
security guard working across the northern highway heard Kaluru’s desperate
cries for help and told us off camera what he heard and saw.
Eyewitness,
“The man was crying. So he looked out and he saw the action, two guys
dressed in black shirts, they were fighting with him, and one fighting with
the other guy. They were wrestling, went to the ground for a couple minutes,
and after they stood up and left the security. The other guy had a long gun
and he touched him to see if he was dead.”
Kaluru had been viciously stabbed multiple times.
Clemente Palacio, Police Press Officer
“It was a savage killing. Of course the way he was stabbed attest to a vicious encounter. According to the report three men approached him at
the booth, stabbed him multiple times. They were seen fleeing from over the
fence. Again the motive cannot established. There are no suspects in police
custody at this time.”
Jules Vasquez,
“Was there any evidence of him having been robbed?”
Clemente Palacio,
“There was no evidence as far as we are concerned about robbery.”
Jules Vasquez,
“So from all outward indications, it would appear that they set out to
kill him and they killed him?”
Clemente Palacio,
“Well the vicious nature of the attack speaks to a malicious intended act against him it seems.”
Jules Vasquez,
“I mean directly against him, not like they wanted to get into the hotel?”
Clemente Palacio,
“It seems so.”
The tightly knit Nigerian community is in mourning.
Elijah Olagotun, Friend of Deceased
“He was a friend of mine. He came to my house about last week Thursday
and he worked at the hotel along the Northern Highway and he also a taxi driver.
I just heard about the death of him this morning. He is a very nice man, a quiet
man. I don’t know how the death came. I don’t know.”
Sarafa Situ, Friend of Deceased
“We don’t know who did it, only God knows but I plead to the
people because this does not only happen to Africans, it happens to Belizeans.
Why do we have to kill each other my brother? We need love, we need love to
come together as one. I praise God and I ask the brothers and sisters in Belize,
all of us are one because on the day of resurrection he will not call you African
or you are Belizean or you are white – he will judge you on what you do.”
Kaluru Oloungudu moved to Belize eight months ago and was both a security
guard and a taxi driver. He had a brother in Belize but no other family.
