Battle Lines Drawn in Pomona Valley
posted (February 15, 2010)

To paraphrase that classic old tune, it’s going to be “a helluva time in Pomona Valley” this week as the membership of the Citrus Growers’ Association is staging a two day demonstration in front of the Citrus Company of Belize Facility on the Stann Creek Valley Road. The event is being staged to coincide with the visit of Richard Cozier and Sir Allan Fields and other officials from Banks Holdings Limited in Barbados. They sit on the board of the Citrus Products of Belize Limited and represent Banks’s 47% interest. They are here for a board meeting which is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in Belize City.

But the Citrus Growers Association – which owns the majority shareholding of 51% - is determined not to make their visit pass smoothly and has planned what is being called a peaceful and law abiding demonstration.

As we’ve reported, the Citrus Growers Association holds the position that as the majority share-holder they reserve the absolute right to appoint and remove their directors. But they have been unable to move Henry Canton, Michael Duncker and Frank Redmond – who nominally represent the growers but say they must act in the interest of the company not the CGA. That’s where the line is drawn and tomorrow it will extend to the Stann Creek Valley Road and we’ll have coverage of that in tomorrow’s newscast.
