Math Olympiad Eliminations in Belize City
posted (February 16, 2010)

The Math Olympiad came to the City Center for the Belize District eliminations today. It is part of a national competition where scores of students from across the country test their math skills. The questions are tough and in terms of pride the stakes are high. But the intangible in all this is the excitement; the events are always hype and today at the City Center was no different. Here’s how it looked.

Leticia Vega, Social Security Board
“I think it is more dynamic, there is more enthusiasm, and you see the point of the game.”

Jules Vasquez,
“Do you see a higher level of competence from the students, a higher level of preparedness?”

Leticia Vega,
“Definitely Jules, some prepare years before. Years before the competition they are already preparing for their school elimination process and so they are well well prepared. I think it is amazing to see the students, how well they do in math and how effort they put into participate. The Belize Math Olympiad was never heard before at a national level but right now we have in terms of a game trying to spread that enthusiasm in a subject that is feared by many but we are trying to break that barrier and I think in the long run we will see in the workforce and their input in making the country a better one. That is the ultimate goal, to have a better prepared workforce and right now we are seeing some of the first session, the 2007 champs, and one of them is here at Social Security Board so we are happy to see even first hand the effects of the math Olympiad and I think countrywide we see the importance of math.”

The Olympiad started on February fourth in the south and it all culminates in the national competition which will be held on March 10.
