But while at the Belize Zoo today we got an update on Hope the Harpy
Eagle. As we told you last week, Hope was tracking into populated areas which
raised alarms for zookeepers. Zoo Director Sharon Matola gave us the update.
Sharon Matola, Director – Belize Zoo
“Hope the Harpy Eagle, we received recent data and it indicates that
Hope has turned north and is headed back towards the Rio Bravo Area. So I will
get another reading in the next couple of days and hopefully Hope will stay
on that type of course and be safe.”
Keith Swift,
“And again the message to the persons living in these areas is?”
Sharon Matola,
“Hope will not harm you, Hope will not go after your livestock, after
your pets, after your children - Hope is just doing what any other harpy eagle
would do and that is travel around and checking out Belize. So he is being a
tourist in his own country so please don’t hurt him. He is just trying
to establish his territory and apparently he is doing well because he was released
in December and he has to be eating out there and he is just being a harpy eagle.”
