Coast Guard, Port Authority and law enforcement personnel from 11 Caribbean
countries are in Belize for a maritime conference. It is facilitated by the
US Naval School and Keith Swift found out what it’s about.
Jim Petroni, US Naval School
“What we are doing this week is we are running a week long seminar
on potentials of maritime violence which includes everything from piracy to
terrorism potential to just crime and smuggling issues clearly. But we are doing
it for the Caribbean region. What we hope is that by the end of the week we
will collectively have a better understanding of the threats that face the region
and we will offer them some solutions or a sense of solution, some of which
are tools and techniques that we have employ elsewhere. Most will be solutions
that were locally. The essence of this is preparedness, we can only do some
much when the crisis occurs and we have to respond. So anything that these people
can do to better prepare themselves, the better understanding of the problem,
leads them to find their own solutions and as often as we can to prevent incidents
before they occur.”
