Belizeans from the Toledo District all the way to Benque Viejo felt a tremor
at 9:15 this morning. The source was a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in Guatemala
near its northern border with Mexico.
International news reports say that the quake was centered 51 miles north
northeast of Huehuetenago, and 106 miles north northwest of Guatemala City.
A 5.6 magnitude quake is capable of considerable damage but there were no immediate
reports of damage or injuries.
In Belize City it did cause a scary tremor though – particularly for
those in large concrete buildings and one large bank is reported to have activated
its earthquake evacuation plan and cleared out the building.
