No Case Submission in Trial of Cop Accused of Murder

He’s a policeman accused of murder in the line of duty but today Richard Polonio’s attorney made a no case submission. Polonio was accused of shooting and killing 49 year old Carmen Alexander Herrera on August 3rd, 2008 near the Swing Bridge in Belize City. Herrera was shot in the head and back with a shotgun after jumping into the Belize River. He was running from Police; eyewitnesses say he had weed in his hand; Police say he had a gun. Polonio pulled the trigger and he has been on remand at Hattieville Prison for 18 months, since August 12, 2008.

His trial commenced on Friday, February 19. After testimony from a number of witnesses, Polonio’s attorney Dickie Bradley made a no case submission before Justice Troadio Gonzalez this afternoon. Court reports are that Justice Gonzalez will deliver his decision on that tomorrow.
