Often on this newscast, we report on the passing of notable Belizeans –
men and women who’ve been honoured for their contributions to society.
Johnny Moss is not one of those but for residents of Belize City – his
passing is eminently noteworthy; the man was a legend in the streets. The 75
year old Moss died early Tuesday morning at the KHMH from diabetes and other
complications.
Moss rose to prominence as the proprietor at Johnny King’s Club on Queen
Charlotte Street in the 50’s, moving on to Q club in the 80’s. Moss
was considered a kingpin and despite his quiet demeanour commanded maximum respect
on the streets. Checking in with him was considered a rite of passage for football
and basketball stars of that era.
And while in death his name carries no honorific, the man known as “The
Hardest” will be remembered as an absolute icon of the Southside.
