And while most the attention on the police recently has been about
murder conspiracies and ineffectual law enforcement – the work to equip
and train police personnel continues. Yesterday National Security Minister Carlos
Perdomo went to the Queen Street Police station to make a small donation of
equipment including two motorcycles, a few computers, and an array of mechanical
tools. Both he and the Commissioner said that it is in fulfilment of the Crooks
Report which focuses on equipment and training.
Hon. Carlos Perdomo, Minister of National Security
“The police are receiving the two new patrol motorcycles. This is
an addition to the six that are already operating in Belize City and working
and operating very well, improving our response time and being able to manoeuvre
in highly trafficked area of the city. We are also handing over an assortment
of auto mechanic repair tools.”
Crispin Jeffries, Commissioner of Police
“The equipment being shared is among those we urgently need. I want
to say that the motorcycles will definitely replace those that were in use in
those areas and make us operationally effective in those areas as well as mobile
again.”
Hon. Carlos Perdomo,
“Very shortly the department will increase when we will recruit 100
new officers. The majority of our officers are good officers. I would like just
to send a message to those who are not performing well or who are showing dishonesty
or not working under the proper force orders, that we will get them and we will
get them out of the Police Department.”
These two cycles will be used in rural areas – one of them in
Bermudian Landing and the 11 surrounding villages. In other equipment upgrade,
police will also get a new fleet of 8 or ten vehicles with funding from the
US sponsored Merida Initiative. Taiwan is sponsoring ten other motor-cycles.
