The main event on the annual cycling calendar, the Holy Saturday Cross
Country Cycling Classic is only a month away. On Sunday the riders will participate
in the last major race before the Cross Country – the 29th running of
the annual Belmopan Cycling Classic. Public Relations Officer for the Belize
Cycling Association Kwame Scott told us why he’s excited.
Kwame Scott, Public Relations Officer – Cycling Association
“This is the final viewing of our riders before the big one. This
is where you shuffle the deck, this is where you remember that in 1990 Charlie
Lewis won this race before he won his first Cross Country. This is where in
1997 Ernest Meighan won his first Belmopan race before he won the Cross Country
in 1997 as did Chris Frederick in 1999 and Edwardo Uribe in 2002.”
Jules Vasquez,
“Should we expect another strong dominant showing from Marlon Castillo?”
Kwame Scott,
“Oh definitely, Marlon Castillo is actually dubbed by me and a lot
of cycling enthusiasts if you may as Belize’s brightest hope to bring
the garland back home on Holy Saturday. Heading into Sunday in this 100 mile
race, Marlon is definitely one of the top five favourites, top two favourites
if you may, and probably the favourite rider heading into this race.
Unfortunately, sponsorship for this particular race, although it is 29
years old has not been forthcoming. As we all know the times we are living in,
I guess the economic situation, but the Belize Cycling Association however has
decided that this race must be a reality; so the prizes will be miniscule, it
will be financial. I can mention also that there will be no, absolutely no station
prizes along the route. However I must mention that the door is still open.”
If you want to contribute a station prize call 670-0952. The race starts
at 8:00 from the Constitution Park in Belize City, head to Belmopan and back
for a total of 100 miles. Giovanni Froggy Leslie is the defending male champion.
