And Goff’s Caye is probably one of the only things in Belize
the artist Supa G doesn’t have a song about. He’s a prolific songwriter
and recording artist. In the 9 years since going solo in 2001, he’s put
out eight albums. That’s almost an album a year and he’s backed
it up with a rigorous touring schedule. Sure enough, Supa G is the most consistent,
most productive Belizean artist of his generation – and he’s also
the most popular. And now he’s released a new album. It’s called
“Still Standing” and it features 18 tracks. He told us how he arrived
at the name.
Supa G, Releasing New CD
“Because all the ups and downs in the music industry now globally,
as you could see in the background you have a lot of buildings collapsing, an
earthquake just happened and still Supa G is standing. That signifies the struggles
which I have gone through, what I am going through, and how I am still strong
and standing and representing Belize.
Honestly the music isn’t selling in Belize. I did better on the ‘Supa
deh yah,’ the first album but not in a way where I could say I could get
rich off of music. So this what I am doing is for the love of the music, the
love of the people, love of Belize and wanting to have Belize out there, at
least Belize could say out there you have an artist who is releasing an album
every year, just like how the Jamaicans they do it. So I do it for the love.
And then having eighteen songs on this album, I did that because after
this I will take a pause because again because of the sales of the album, you
spend a lot of money and you don’t really make back that money. Financially
it is not really there. The thing I always say on interviews is that the money
is not the main thing for me. Just getting smiles on people’s faces after
they left a Supa G concert or after they listen to an album from me, that is
the reward for me first of all.”
Supa G says that after this, he’ll take a three year hiatus from
recording. In that time, he’ll put out a children’s album. “Still
Standing” is now available in record stores.
