And while cycling and canoeing are fixtures on the ninth of March Calendar,
there was a newcomer this weekend – or we should say an old-timer making
a comeback. The season opener of senior basketball tipped at the City Center
on Friday night and it gave our crew a feeling like it was the 90’s all
over again. Here’s how the men’s senior game went.
Jules Vasquez Reporting,
The Civic was alive with mascots, team huddles, fans, and a halftime entertainment
with a twist as elite basketball returned to the City Center. The senior match
up featured the UB Black Jaguars versus the Habet Brothers Berger Boys.
The game was an up and down affair with UB’s Guards, led by Leroy Luriano
who with this breakaway lay up – shot UB out to a ten to three lead. The
Brothers Habet Berger Boys battled back with size on this below the rim alley
loop to Elsworth Itza. While for UB, the elder statesman of the league Darren Bovell showed the young ones how it’s done by taking a charge from Greg
Rudon.
At the end of first quarter coach Seroki huddled his players for spirit while
on the other side coach Tambran did the same. It worked for Berger’s Edward
Baptist who showed that he could make the shot but they couldn’t contain
Winston Pratt who collected the offensive rebound off to take a 7 point lead.
And 44 year old Richard Soto got the shooters bounce to convert this buzzer
beater at the end of the first half giving UB a 14 point led. In the second
half Rudon fought to get his team back in the game.
But in the end UB was too much on this night with Leroy Loriano taking the
hoop and the harm on this fading runner to bring the lead to 15. They ended
with a 30 point blowout in this inaugural game of the Belize District Senior
Season.
Sunday night’s senior game between the Belize Bank Bulldogs and
the San Pedro Tigersharks was closer but still not tight with the Bulldogs besting
the Tigersharks by 15 81 to 66.
