Notorious thirty four year old Hubert “Kid” Velasquez, who was
found guilty of 3 counts of robbery and sentenced to 7 years for each count
in an ex-parte trial, was apprehended at his home on Antelope Street Extension
yesterday by the police and taken to the prison in Hattieville to begin serving
his time.
Magistrate Sharon Fraser, who imposed the sentences, stipulated that they should
run concurrently. The robberies occurred over a year ago on January 20th, 2009,
at K&S Mini Mart, located at La Democracia at Mile 31 on the Western Highway.
Nineteen year old Jose Maldonado, the gas attendant at K&S Mini Mart, testified
that while he was inside the mart he was approached by two men armed with firearms
who forced him to pull down the metal shutters with them inside. Maldonado said
the gunmen stole $500 from him plus his cell phone. One of the gunmen approached
the security guard, Marvin Anderson, and relieved him of his .38 revolver and
his cell phone. The culprits also stole $853 from the cash register and a handbag
belonging to the cashier, Sara Santos, which contained $25 and some personal
documents.
Maldonado identified Velasquez as one of the robbers. Velasquez last appeared
in court on February 3rd, when the prosecution closed its case. He was supposed
to have returned March 9th, for a decision by the court, but when he failed
to appear the ex-parte trial was held.
