Suspects Still Wanted for Scotia Bank Heist
posted (April 1, 2010)

And while investigators believe that the police criminal ring masterminded the biggest, most violent bank heist in Belize history on Tuesday at the Scotia Bank Spanish Lookout Branch, two of the men who actually pulled it off are still wanted by police. They are Alexander Edwards and Gabriel Salazar – both residents of San Pedro. Police believe they may have fled into Guatemala and are working along with authorities on that side of the border to catch them.

Today Commissioner Jeffries said that four Cayo residents were colluding with the robbers and will be charged for conspiracy. Yesterday, police reported that the getaway vehicle a Suzuki Sidekick and two persons had been found in Valley of Peace. At this time though, there is no word on charges for those persons.

As we reported, the four men pulled up at the bank just before 9:00 on Tuesday, shot and killed the security guard with a single action shotgun. They then went inside held up the manager and staff, forced them to open the vault and collected three hundred thousand dollars in Belize currency. Police say they took less than ten minutes to do this – but all those minutes elapsed after they killed the security guard outside. During this time, there was no response from the police station which sits right next to the bank. On the way out, they also robbed a depositor of ten thousand dollars.
