Coy Crashes; His Wife Dead
posted (May 10, 2010)
And from that very disturbing case, to a tragic loss for an elected official 34 year old Juan Coy, Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development lost his wife in an accident on the Southern Highway on Friday evening.

Reports are that Coy's brother in law, 30 year old Venancio Salam was driving the Minister and his wife, 33 year old Brigida in Nissan Navara Pickup on the Southern Highway near Indian Creek village.

He lost control on the loose gravel and the vehicle slid to the shoulder where it had a blowout. It flipped on the right hand side of the road and Brigida who reportedly did not have a seatbelt on flew out and reportedly suffered a massive injury to her head and died at 6:45pm. The Minister was in the passenger seat while wife was in back seat. Coy and Salam lived and we were there as they were brought into the KHMH via chopper.

Hon. Boots Martinez
"Minister Coy is in good shape. He has some face abrasions. They did cat scan, they did x-ray and he is in good condition. He is down hearted but he is in good physical condition."

Jules Vasquez
"So he is aware that his wife has died."

Hon. Boots Martinez
"That was the first thing he said to me as he walked through the door. So he is well aware that is wife has died."

Jules Vasquez
"Ok now I saw as he walked in, but I saw his brother-in-law taken in a stretcher. How is his condition?"

Hon. Boots Martinez
"His condition head-wise he is ok, bodily-wise he is ok, but his brother in law has a broken foot, his feet are broken, I mean real broken of which the bones are pushing through the flesh. He will go to surgery probably in the next hour or two after he stabilizes."

Jules Vasquez
"Were you able to offer Mr. Coy any words of consolation in there, he has gone through a terrible loss a very traumatic accident."

Hon. Boots Martinez
"Oh sure, not only words of consolation. I will be here with Mr. Coy throughout his ordeal probably whole night. I will be here with him until tomorrow probably when more family members come, so I will stay here with him tonight."

Jules Vasquez
"Is it a fact that he lost an ear."

Hon. Boots Martinez
"No, not as far as the x-ray shows, but his ear is probably torn up terribly but in my view he haven't lost an ear."

Jules Vasquez
"We have heard some reports from some people down there saying that there is a defect in the road some deterioration in the civil works, as you enter the Indian Creek area which is around where this accident happened. Are you aware of that?"

Hon. Boots Martinez
"I am not aware of that. I know that the Southern Highway is near completion and I think they have just, as I understand it, that they have just finish paving that section. Also immediately after paving it is dangerous because you usually have loose gravel, but I don't really know the exact physical location, but I understand it's a new area that has just been paved."

Funeral services for Brigida Coy will be held on Wednesday. Reports are that all three were returning from Belize City where they had gone to purchase gifts for mother's day. Reportedly, the Minister was going to host an activity for Mothers Day on Saturday past.
