The Juarez Cartel and Belize
posted (May 10, 2010)
And while Arthur Young is being deported back to Belize, a Mexican fugitive who – reports say - once hid out in Belize is being extradited to the USA. Mario Villanueva Madrid, who was governor of the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo from 1993 to 1999, was turned over to U.S. authorities on Saturday.

He is charged in New York federal court with aiding the Juarez cartel smuggle hundreds of tons of Colombian cocaine to the United States via Cancun. U.S. prosecutors have said Villanueva received $500,000 for each of several shipments he aided.

It is of note because former Juarez underlord Jorge Manuel Torres Teyer who got his Belizean citizenship as Joirge Moreno was found in Belize. Moreno was granted Belizean citizenship in October of 2001 and was apprehended shortly after during Hurricane Iris when police on a routine patrol caught him driving up stop on George Street where he'd gone to purchase some marijuana. According to a release from the U.S. attorney's office when he was convicted in the United States, Torres Teyer's cell of the Juarez cartel operated in Quintana Roo and Belize, and was, "assisted by corrupt military and police officials in both countries." The drugs were brought in from Colombia on the high seas of Belize, and then relayed to Calderitas where they were then transferred to land and transported to the United States by ground crews.
