The Bust Behind The Crash
posted (May 20, 2010)
Last night we told you about the collision that ASP Alford Grinage was involved in. As we reported, Grinage was pursuing a car that was later intercepted in a drug bust. Well, he was pursuing a car that was involved in a drug deal, but the drug bust was made on the northern highway by the Anti Drug Unit. That's where 48 year old Punta Gorda resident Diego Witz was caught with 4.3 kilos of cocaine.

ASP Grinage was the one who caused the bust. Yesterday at around 2:00, he was near the City Center doing routine patrol surveillance in an unmarked Hilux when he noticed a car with Dangriga plates. Witz was in the front seat of the car and a man with dreads was in the back. He followed the car to the Texaco gas station at mile one on the Northern Highway where they pulled up in front of the Belize Bank. Grinage saw Witz go into a nearby white vehicle and come out with money stuffed in his pants. He gave the money to the man with dreads in the red car who then took out a sack and started to pour the contents out into a smaller bag that Witz was holding. Witz slung the smaller bag over his shoulder, got out the red car and jumped into his white car, and headed north. Grinage alerted a passing ADU team to intercept him while he followed the car with Dangriga plates. The driver of the car realized he was being tailed and started speeding off in the direction of the Western Highway. Grinage set chase and that's when he crashed into PUP Deputy Leader Francis Fonseca's vehicle. The car got away and was not intercepted at the mile 3 checkpoint. It's a shame because based on what the police observed that had the larger quantity of cocaine.

Whatever the case, police did catch Diego Witz. A search conducted on the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a red knapsack containing a black plastic bag with (5) brown "BOSS" brand parcels suspected to be cocaine and six thousand dollars, US currency in different denominations. He has been charged for trafficking 4.3 kilos of cocaine.
