Deputy Willoughby: “To Be Or Not To Be”
posted (May 20, 2010)
And while we were at the temporary market with the Social Investment Fund we got a chance to ask Deputy Mayor "Philloughby" about a disturbing but persistent rumor that he will step down as deputy mayor. You'll recall that he was elected to that post in February and had to fight off 7 of his fellow councilors to keep it. But after all that, seems he's thinking about giving it up. Here's what he had to say today:

Jules Vasquez
"Is it a fact that you have stepped down as the Deputy Mayor of Belize City?"

Phillip Willoughby - Deputy Mayor
"Would you like me to?"

Jules Vasquez
"Not at all."

Phillip Willoughby
"There is no such discussion yet for me to decide publicly what the future holds. I do have concerns and if I want to look at my political career, you have to look closely at the negatives that surrounds. You try to weigh the positive and the negative and if you keep hitting a wall, then you have to look at your options and choices. I will remain here so as long as I have the energy and if I can impact with some level and degree of change. When I run out of that energy to make that change then I believe the time would then come."

Willoughby's term as Deputy Mayor runs until next year March. Though 7 councilors opposed it, we understand that resolution to challenge it has been abandoned.
