Bogus Bills In Botes
posted (May 27, 2010)
In February we took you inside the community of San Francisco Botes, a Mexican village just across the Rio Hondo from the Orange Walk District frequented by Belizean shoppers looking for bargains and ready to dabble in the contraband trade. As we showed you, supermarkets in Botes freely take Belizean dollars. And now they are getting burned for it. The Diario Quintana Roo reports that dozens of counterfeit Belize dollar bills have been detected in riverside villages - like Botes and La Union and in the Corozal Free Zone.

According to Mexican Police, in the last 3 weeks at least 40 Belizean notes of different denominations, have been found, most of it used to purchase food and electronic items in Botes and La Union. Mexican Authorities told the newspaper that Mexican counterfeiters who can no longer copy the Mexican notes which are printed on a special plastic type material have now started using their expertise to copy Belizean notes. The newspaper further reports that Mexican and Belizean authorities are collaborating in the investigation and the results so far show that that for each bill detected there could be 100 that have passed unnoticed.
