The Hope For Youth
posted (June 1, 2010)
The Ministry of Youth - from government to government it's passed around like a poorly kept secret - and now it's going to its third minister in this UDP term. And while the ministry of youth should offer more promise than any other ministry, the truth is - it is more a title than anything else. Today the latest minister Patrick Faber told us why he thinks he can make a difference:..

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education and Youth
"Well, it is going to be additional work there is no doubt about that and indeed the Ministry of Education itself is a very huge ministry and one that I have come to appreciate that it was placed on its own for a little while. However I believe that Youth is tied into the Ministry of Education as it has been done now, there are many advantages that we can make. Many of the programs now that you see coming up in the Ministry of Education or that we have plans to put in place in the near future deals a lot with the young people for instance you may have heard of the government's intention to restart an apprenticeship program. You know our problems in truancy education where many of the school age children don't have that kind of support at home so they are not able to enforce them going to school. If we are able to marry these social Ministries together... And you may say yes but this is not all the social Ministries coming together but certainly two of them coming together is better than none of them being amalgamated or just having so many different Ministers. If we have the cooperation of their social Ministries so solve these kinds of problems a lot can be achieved and it is a perfect marriage and I look forward to putting the same kind of energy that we have displayed in the Ministry of Education in the Ministry of Youth. I am excited in fact of the possibilities that can come into being. When the Prime Minister asked me over the weekend, in fact I spent the entire weekend and Monday thinking of new ideas of what we can do and we have a lot of ideas a lot of possibilities, so the Belizean people can look forward to strong movement in that ministry, hopefully in order to support our new Ministry of Police and Public Security so that we are able to curb many of the problems that we are seeing in Belize City but also many of the problems we have in the larger nation of Belize."
